The Female Landscape

I grew up inundated by cultural representations of women that felt out-of-touch with my lived experience. Later, as a documentary photographer, I viewed these images and expectations with a more critical eye, realizing the power they had to continue to influence young women. As I photographed the world around me, many times I wished it looked otherwise. Too often, I recognized that the prescriptions and limitations set in our paths had changed very little from previous generations. But there were also women that made me feel hopeful, as I could admire their joy, intelligence, persistence, and creativity in forging their own paths.
