Common Denominator

In 1975, I photographed and interviewed a small community of marginalized people who gathered daily on the Boston Common for fellowship and support, with many returning year after year. A situation that appeared to be misery looking for company was really more of a makeshift family. One of the people I met there, Ricky MacDonald, became a lifelong friend, who sent me his autobiography “Through Junked-Out Eyes” in regular installments from prison. The Common Denominator portfolio was exhibited at Boston City Hall Gallery in 1976, and three images were selected as "Best Photographs of the Bicentennial Year" by The Village Voice and shown at the International Center for Photography. This project is now being developed as a photo book with transcripts and essays.
